History

GETAH was founded in the spring of 2009- however its beginnings were being conceived and developed since January 11, 2007. Its origin began in Kenya with the realization that there is an ever increasing demand and need for social equality and development. It was felt that the most successful programs would tackle the root causes of the issues concerning economically impoverished rural and urban areas and strengthen the families' ability to care and nurture the growth of their children.

A lack of educational opportunities, both formal and informal, for a large segment of the population, is one of the chief reasons for widespread poverty. Basic Primary and Secondary education, in addition to alternative learning opportunities in art, music and creative expression are essential to mental and physical development. Studies show education reduces teenage pregnancy, crime, spread of infectious disease and most of all; schooling provides a sense of social equality and hope. The community of Mithi-ini lacked basic education opportunities for the majority of its citizens. The solution was to provide the community with affordable, educational solutions.

A community initiated project began, a school which the local community of Mithi-ini, could call their own. The community would share in the labor, in the development of their children's education, and manage the school on their own. On August 7 we began to mold the bricks for Mithi-ini Secondary School. The two classrooms and one office were completed October 19, 2007. The Mithi-ini Secondary School was built by the parents, guardians, brothers and sisters of the 60 students currently attending Mithi-ini. It is managed and operated by the people of Mithi-ini.

This was a wonderful accomplishment but we felt that we still faced a number of challenges. How do we give those with creative talents the ability to express themselves and explore the possibilities of Art, Dance, Music, and Theater? These courses were not apart of the curriculum and it was apparent that many of these forms of expression were being lost. We heard no music, saw no dance, traditional dress or native crafts. The skills being taught: hair dressing, computers, tailoring, mechanics, carpentry etc. were all wonderful skills but these markets were saturated and driving down the value. This led us to the understanding that diversification of skills would lead to the increase of family income, a much needed solution to economic stagnation. This need provides a solution; introduce a new and diverse set of skills, ones which bring together the richness and fulfillment of culture and bring forth the essence of our being-creativity!
